"This is the tale of my encounter with Vanitas, of our shared journey through trials and tribulations, gaining much, yet losing more, culminating in a tragic finale where I am the one to take his life."
Unfolding in a stately semblance of 19th-century Paris, where humans and vampires coexist in harmony, the vampires in the story are free from their bloodthirsty urges and hence pose no harm to humans. However, vampires who had their names robbed by a calamity go rogue, their sanity restored only by reclaiming their true names. Vanitas, one of the main protagonists and a human, is a healer for such vampires.
His method of treatment involves interfering with the vampires' true names using 'The Book of Vanitas' to realign the corrupted names back to their original form. This book originated from a mythical 'Blue-Moon Vampire', the namesake Vanitas. All vampires are born under the scarlet full moon, but this Blue-Moon Vampire was born under an ominous blue moon, subjected to constant ridicule from his kin. The Book of Vanitas was his instrument for revenge against his brethren. The mystery of why this book is now in the possession of a human Vanitas and how he uses it to heal vampires forms the crux of this deeply engrossing narrative.
