Maki shares a distinctive twinning with her sister, Mai Zenin, making them monozygotic twins—an aspect often viewed as a bad omen in the Jujutsu world and resulting in a shared pool of their cursed energy. However, due to a Heavenly Restriction, Maki has an extremely low level of cursed energy that matches a typical non-shaman.

In an ironic twist, Maki's lack of cursed energy led her to be considered unfit within her clan, prompting her to break ties with the Zenin family to prove her capacity as a sorcerer.
