I heard her talking so he must have picked up the call. I didn't hear any part of the conversation since my brain started to turn off. I was roused from sleep when I felt my body being put down and a seatbelt strapped me in.
I fell back asleep and when I woke up the second time, I found myself in an elevator being carried by Artemis.
"Where am I?" I asked drowsily as I rubbed my sleep filled eyes.
"We're almost home." He said tensely. For the first time, he didn't seem smug or playful or seductive.
I looked up at him and smiled as I tried to flatten out his furrowed eyebrows with my fingertip. "Why the long face? You look like someone stole your food or something." I giggled as I kept smoothing out the crease between his brows.
"Couldn't you stay out of trouble when I'm not around?" He said with the same serious tone.
I stared at him with a question mark on my face. "Trouble? I'm no trouble. I'm the opposite of trouble. If you look in the dictionary, you won't find my name under the word trouble."
"Okay. I get the point." He sounded almost annoyed. What had gotten into him?
I giggled again as I lightly trace my fingertip down his perfectly straight nose. "You're so handsome. How did I get so lucky?"
He chuckled. I could feel it in his chest as the sound moved up and out of his mouth. "You wouldn't say that if you were sober right now."
"I'm sober. I can count my A B Cs and 1 2 3s." I said with confidence as I snuggled against him. "Hmm you smell really nice." He laughed again. Oh how I loved this sound.
I flattened my ear and my hand against his chest, the top of my head touching his chin.
"What are you doing?" He asked with amusement.
"I want to hear your laugh better." I strained my ear to hear the sounds within his chest.
Like on command, he gave a delightful laugh. "I guess seeing you drunk like this is quite entertaining. What's not entertaining is finding my wife sleeping in someone else's arms when I come to pick her up." His body tensed up again.
The elevator dinged and the doors opened. He carried me out and walked toward our penthouse. The thought of this new place starting to feel like home, our home, warmed my heart.
My arms went around his neck as I buried my face into the crook of it. "Our home." I murmured softly.
"What's that sweetheart?" He asked as he punched in the code to unlock the door. He held me so easily in his arms like I weighed nothing.
I didn't answer and yawned audibly as I covered my mouth with one hand.
He continued to carry me upstairs and straight into my bedroom. He gently set me down on my bed and turned to rummage through my walk-in closet. As he was looking for whatever he was looking for, I crawled under the comfy blanket and released a pleasurable sigh.
As I almost drifted off to sleep, I felt my blanket pulled away from me. "You can't sleep yet. Change into your pajamas first, you'll be much more comfortable in it than in what you're wearing right now."
I groaned. "No. I want to sleep." I whined as I tried to pull the blanket back.
"If you don't change by yourself, I will do it for you." He threatened and that woke me right up.
I angrily threw away the cover and missed my footing as I tumbled out of bed. He caught my elbow to steady me and I jerked away. "Why are you being so mean to me? Can't you just let me sleep?" I softly wailed with annoyance.
"I will once you change, brush your teeth, and wash your face." He turned around, his back facing me, as I yanked my top and skirt off without a care in the world.
After putting my pajamas on, I crawled into bed again but he grabbed my arm and led me to the bathroom. I sighed in defeat and tried to brush my teeth. My hand eye coordination wasn't doing so well but he didn't seem to mind. He just leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed and patiently waited. After drying my face, I clumsily tripped coming out of the bathroom only to have him swept me off my feet and carried me to bed.
"I missed you." I mumbled into his chest.
"And I you." He said softly.
"No, you didn't." I whimpered. "Or you would've called or texted me more."
"I'm just not a text person. I'd prefer face to face conversations." He explained as though that would make me feel better.
I grabbed the lapel of his suit jacket and buried my face in it; I just wanted to get closer to him, even closer than how we were now.
When we reached the bed and he was about to put me down, my grip on him tightened and I whispered into his chest. "Can I sleep with you tonight?"
His body went rigid, after a long 10 seconds, he relaxed and said. "Okay."
I exhaled happily and snuggled closer as he carried me to his room. He put me down on his bed and I crawled under the cover and pulled it up to my nose. I loved that it had his scent and I could inhale it forever.
He went into the bathroom to take a shower as I laid there wondering when he would be done and how it would feel to snuggle against him all night in his bed. However, before I got my answers, my heavy eyelids pulled me into a blissful sleep.
