The narrative commences with Yggdrasil, a well-received online game abruptly ceasing operations one day. Nonetheless, the central character, Momonga, opts not to log out. Subsequently, Momonga undergoes a transformation, assuming the appearance of a skeleton labeled as "the most powerful wizard." The world undergoes further transformations, as non-player characters (NPCs) start experiencing emotions.
