He made his first appearance in the 43rd chapter of the 5th volume. Zeff is notably proficient in kick fighting to the point that he once stained his leg red with blood of his enemies, hence his nickname. He saved Sanji's life and has since become his mentor. Zeff is currently both the owner and head chef of the Baratie floating restaurant. Zeff once journeyed through the perilous Grand Line for a year. He later encountered a disaster at sea with Sanji, during which he lost one leg. His invincible kick skills, which once easily shattered rocks and etched footprints on steel, remain his trademark. Zeff is voiced by Koji Yada and Tsutomu Hiura in the anime, while in the Live-Action Series produced by Netflix, he is portrayed by Craig Fabulous. In one of the most touching scenes in "One Piece", when he and Sanji were stranded on a desolate island, Zeff, after losing his own leg, gave all of the remaining food supplies to Sanji. During Sanji's apprenticeship on the Orbit, the Cook Pirates, led by Red-Leg Zeff, attacked the ship for its treasure. Sanji, being a courageous child, resisted and was cast overboard by a huge wave amidst a storm. Surprisingly, Zeff took a heroic plunge into the choppy sea to rescue him. The ordeal ended with Zeff sacrificing his own leg, trapped under the ship, to save Sanji. On a desolate island, they survive with just one small bag of food from the ship. Zeff gave all of this to Sanji. Surprising Sanji, Zeff was more haggard, having only eaten his own severed leg for sustenance. Inspired by Zeff's selflessness, Sanji vowed to establish a floating restaurant where no one would starve. This life-changing event instilled a deep respect for food in Sanji, exemplifying the struggle of survival, and Zeff being the father-figure he never had. Even though they exchange crude nicknames, Sanji will never forget the dicey stormy night, and the experiences they shared on the deserted island. Sanji not only inherited Zeff's brusque yet caring personality, but also he learned his superior cooking skills and strong leg technique. In fulfilling his own childhood dream, he also carries forth Zeff's dream, he embarks on a journey to find the legendary "All Blue" along with Luffy.
